Create a Reading Nook in Your Home

The world around us can be overwhelming at times and reading offers a way to escape the chaos, even if it’s only for a little while. If you love to read, finding a nice, quiet place to do so can be difficult, especially if you live in a home with others.

To help you create the perfect place to curl up with a good book, we’ve put together a short step-by-step tutorial below. Follow it and soon you’ll have the perfect reading nook right in your own home.

Step 1 – Look for the Right Space

Nothing is more annoying than being engrossed in a good book only to be repeatedly interrupted by the goings-on around you. To begin the perfect reading nook, look for a space that’s out of the way and quiet. Consider the attic, basement, or even the end of a vacant hallway for inspiration. An out-of-the-way spot that’s framed by a large window makes for a great spot to read.

Step 2 – Locate the Perfect Seating

Comfort is a must when reading. Being uncomfortable will only distract you from the pages in front of you. Look for the perfect place to sit – whether it be a chair, a sofa, or even the floor covered in pillows. There is no wrong choice here because the perfect seating is whatever suits you best.

Step 3 – Consider the Extras

Reading is different for everyone. If you prefer reading traditional paper books, you’ll want to include a bookcase to store your favorite novels. On the other hand, if you like to read on an electronic device, you’ll want to include a place to store and charge your device.

Whichever way you like to read, be sure your nook includes a place to put a drink and some snacks because relaxation often includes both.

Step 4 – A Light Source

Whether you read from a book or on an electronic device, lighting is important to reduce eye strain. If your nook has enough room, a table lamp atop an end table looks nice. If your nook is small, a floor lamp may be more suitable. For nooks with little floor space, consider a wall-mounted sconce or lamp instead.

Step 5 – Make it a Treat for the Senses

For a true escape, make sure your reading nook is a treat for all your senses. For the eyes, make sure the color scheme is pleasurable to look at while adding soft, natural scents with live flowers or essential oils can help relax your mind through your sense of smell. Add a soft rug and throw that are a joy to touch and be sure to have a cup of your favorite drink nearby to help you relax and enjoy your time reading.

Reading is a favorite pastime for many people, but few give their reading space much thought. Follow the tips above to create the perfect reading nook in your home.
