The Cost Of Remodeling A Bathroom

Remodeling any room in your home is going to cost a pretty penny. This includes the bathroom. The good news is, however, that bathroom remodels often pay for themselves (mostly) if/when you sell your home, so if you want to remodel your bathroom, you should go ahead and do it.

Below, we discuss some of the expenses associated with bathroom remodels, so you can decide for yourself whether a bathroom remodel is too expensive or not.

What is the Average Cost for a Bathroom Remodel?

It’s difficult to give an average cost or even a price range for a bathroom remodel since costs vary so greatly depending on the materials used and the price for labor. Of course, you can save money by doing the work yourself, but if you aren’t well-versed in DIY bathroom renovations, you should consider hiring a professional.

Many people spend between $4,000-6,000 on renovating their bathrooms, but a good rule of thumb is the more expensive your home, the more you should spend on renovating it. For example, if you own a million-dollar home, spending $20,000 to remodel a bathroom makes sense.

Who Should Do the Work?

As we said earlier, you can always do the work yourself if you’re the DIY type. With that said, doing the work yourself will eat up a lot of your time, which is worth something. Many homeowners and investors use general contractors or handymen to do the work, but you’ll want to do your homework before contracting with one.

Remember, just because a contractor charges more for his services doesn’t mean he’ll provide excellent craftsmanship or quality materials. Typically, better-known contractors/companies will charge a higher price for their services because they can, but this isn’t to say you shouldn’t consider a lesser-known handyman as he may provide excellent craftsmanship as well. A great place to start finding good contractors and handymen is to get recommendations from friends or family if possible.

How Much Does Labor Cost?

This question is difficult to answer as it depends on your location and which contractor you choose. Contractors and handymen charge varying rates, but you can count on paying at least $45 an hour on average. With one contractor working on your bathroom remodel, it could take as long as a week to reach project completion. You’ll pay anywhere from $2,000-4,000 for labor, depending on how good the contractor is at his job. If there is a lot of tile work to be done, it could take longer.

How Can You Save Money on Your Bathroom Remodel?

Bathroom remodels can get very expensive, especially if you’re looking to create a 5-piece master bath with tub, shower, fancy vanities, and custom tile. This type of bathroom remodel could cost you as much as $15,000.

You can save yourself money by leaving the things that don’t need repair and focusing on things that need updating or fixing.

If your house has decent tile, you can leave it rather than update it. Instead of tile, you can install a tub/shower insert to save money. Avoid changing the bathroom layout if you can as plumbers can be awfully expensive. And finally, save as much as you can on the little things like towel bars and mirrors as the cost can add up.
