Get into the Habit of Locking Your Apartment Door – Always!

When you leave your apartment to go to work, you close and lock the door behind you, right? It makes sense to secure your rental when you’re going to be gone for a significant amount of time. But what about when you go to the laundry room or to drop something off by a neighbor? Do you lock your door then? If not, you could be leaving yourself vulnerable to robbery or worse.

It’s a good idea to get into the habit of locking your apartment door every time you leave – whether it’s for eight hours or five minutes. Hindsight is 20/20, which means you shouldn’t wait until something bad happens to make a positive change.

It’s Not Just Your Neighbors You have to Worry About

It’s very tempting to just leave your door unlocked if you’re just going to be out for a few minutes. Avoid that temptation as you never know who’s lurking about just waiting for an opportunity like your unlocked apartment door. From neighbors in your building and their guests to delivery persons and that stranger who slipped in unnoticed, there are a lot of people coming and going in the average apartment building. Even if you trust your neighbors, you can’t trust that everyone in the building is there with pure intentions.

Delays Happen All the Time

Even if you’re only going to get the mail or put more money in the dryer, delays can and do happen. You might run into a neighbor and begin chatting or get distracted otherwise and forget that your door is unlocked. Every second you spend away from your unlocked apartment is another second a criminal has to take advantage. If you get into the habit of locking your door every time you leave your apartment, you’ll never have to worry about rushing back or forgetting that your door is unlocked ever again.

The Visibility Factor and Crime

It’s a fact that most crimes happen as a result of opportunity. Criminals don’t like to work for their spoils, and an unlocked door provides the quiet and inconspicuous entry an intruder looks for. The last thing an intruder wants is for others in the hallway to see them, so leaving your door open – even for a couple of minutes – allows them to enter your apartment unnoticed and then hide in wait for you to return. At that point, you’ll be at a disadvantage because you’re both behind closed doors where no one else can see you.

The reality is the world is full of less-than-honest people looking to take advantage anywhere and everywhere they can. If you’re in the habit of leaving your apartment door unlocked for quick errands, you’re increasing the risk that you’ll fall victim to the undesirables out there. Do yourself a favor and remember to lock your door every time you leave your apartment – no matter how long you think you’ll be gone.
