A Place For Everything In The Garage

The biggest problem in a garage is the amount of “stuff” that accumulates over time. Besides vehicles, you’re apt to find bicycles, tools, kids’ toys, gardening supplies, lawn equipment, and much, much more. It’s no wonder most garages look cluttered and messy.

The good news is you don’t have to get rid of all that important stuff – you simply need to learn how to organize it. Follow the tips below to organize your garage so that your cars fit and everything else is easily accessible, usable, and neat.

Where To Store Everything

Most garages have more wall space than they do floor space, so it only makes sense to make use of this vertical space for storage. Also, most garages have open ceilings and rafters, which also serve as a great storage solution.

Install hooks and shelves on walls to house and organize all your odds and ends. Handheld tools fit nicely on shelves, while extension cords will enjoy a home hanging from hooks on the wall.

Organize all your canned products, paints, etc. on shelves – placing like items with like items. Use bins or boxes for small items – be sure to label the outside of each bin or box to avoid wasting time looking through each box for what you want. In the ceiling rafters, store seasonal items like camping equipment or Christmas decorations – since you don’t need these items often, you won’t mind climbing a ladder to store or retrieve them when you need them.

Designate Areas For Specific Items

In some instances, there may be a need to designate areas for specific use in a garage. For example, if you’re a handyman who does most of his home improvement himself, you likely have a lot of tools and equipment for completing said projects. Hanging the tools of your trade on the wall is a great way to showcase your craft while keeping the things you use often within easy reach.

Alternatively, you may want to consider investing in a rolling toolbox with lots of drawers for storage. Organizing your smaller tools this way allows you to organize everything neatly in separate drawers where it’s easy to find what you’re looking for.

Other Considerations In Garage Organization

Many people store their yard and gardening equipment in the garage. This stuff takes up lots of space, but you can keep the clutter to a minimum by installing a tool strip or rack on the wall for shovels, rakes, and the like. Investing in a hose reel to also hang on the wall is another great idea.

Finally, recycling is mandatory in most communities, and recycling bins can take up a lot of space in the garage. Free up some of that space by purchasing stackable recycling bins and use a handcart to wheel the entire unit to the curb on garbage pickup day.

Garages are notoriously cluttered and messy, but by following the tips above, you can organize your garage and keep it tidy all year long.
