Bathrooms aren’t known for having excessive storage, which is why you must utilize the space you have and get creative with your storage solutions. Even if your bathroom has a closet for storing towels and toiletries, you may want to consider adding some cute shelves over the toilet for things you use regularly as well as some lovely décor, too. Here is a quick and easy tutorial that’ll help you install a couple of shelves above the toilet for extra storage.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Gather all the tools and materials you’ll need for this project, so you won’t need to go rummaging for something in the middle of your work. Some things you’ll need include:
- Wood shelving
- Shelf brackets
- Stud finder
- Wall anchors
Step 2: Determine How High to Hang Shelves
Ideally, you want your shelves to be high enough you won’t bump your head when sitting on the toilet and low enough it isn’t awkward to reach the things on the shelves. A good height for the bottom shelf is about 24 inches from the toilet, and if you’re hanging two shelves, about 18 inches in between is about right to fill in the space without making the top shelf too high.
Step 3: Install the Shelf Brackets
You’ll want to ensure that the brackets are equally spaced along the shelf and from the walls on either side. Measure the width of the wall and subtract the length of the shelf. Divide that number by two to find out how far the shelf should be spaced from the walls on either side. Since the brackets will sit a couple of inches in from each end of the shelf, add two inches to determine their exact placement.
Hold the brackets on the wall and mark where you’ll need to drill. Use a stud finder to see if you’ll hit a stud when you drill. If not, use the anchors to secure the brackets. Use a level to ensure the brackets are aligned perfectly with each other.
Step 4: Sand/Paint/Stain the Shelves
If you’ll be staining or painting the shelves, do it now before you install them on the brackets.
Step 5: Place the Shelves on the Brackets
The last step is to lay the shelves on the brackets and secure them from underneath. Now you’re ready to begin filling them up!
Even if your bathroom has enough storage, you can never go wrong with shelves above the toilet. The project is a quick and easy one, and the result is oh so cute and functional!
