3 Steps to Making Wood Ceiling Beams

Step 1: Plan the Placement

Before you can begin building your ceiling beams, you need to figure out where they’ll go. Map out their placement by identifying joists and marking obstructions like light fixtures, etc. Once you’ve figured out where the beams will go, attach a 1×4 board to the joists using the 4-inch screws. This will be the base for your beams.

Step 2: Make the Beams

Construct the beams by creating a 3-sided box using two 1x4s and one 1×6 held together with wood glue and nails. Use wood filler to fill in the holes and distress/stain the wood to give it that rustic, reclaimed look. Finally, slide the boxes onto the 1×4 you attached to the ceiling in the last step, and again, use the 4-inch screws to hold them in place. Make as many boxes as you need to span the length of your ceiling.

Step 3: Install the Straps

To seal the seams between the boxes, bend thin metal straps (you can find them at any home improvement store) to create a 3-sided square that fits snugly over the box. Spray paint them to give it a rubbed bronze look. Slide the straps over the seams and screw them into place.
